Friday the 14th was an eventful day for Northwestern Evans Scholars. In the afternoon, we got the opportunity to tour the construction site of our old house, and in the evening we went to Chicago for our Spring Formal.

At two PM, most of the active scholars gathered for a tour of the construction site at 721 University, our old home. Two of the main architects led the scholars throughout the entire house to see the new bedrooms, bathrooms, and common areas.

Overall everyone was very excited about the features of the new house. In the fall we will have a hangout lounge, a formal reception area, and a conference room (which we didn’t have before). In some of the rooms the stone façade of the old house was preserved as interior walls. The basement now contains our chapter room, an expanded study room, a laundry room, and a bike storage area.

The architects led us through the tour while explaining much of the reasoning behind the new layout of the house. Some of the scholars took pictures while others started planning for what rooms they’d want next year. We thanked the architects when we left, and we even got to keep the hard hats.

After the tour, we had a little bit of time to get ready for our Spring Formal. This year, like last year, the formal was held at the Palmer House in Chicago. We took buses down to the venue, and started off with a three course meal accompanied by old-time lounge music. The DJ, Clash Gordon, started the dancing off with ‘Shout’ by Otis Day and The Knights and kept us going through the night with mixes of hip-hop and rock. We finished off the night with our traditional Senior Dance to ‘Piano Man’ by Billy Joel.

Needless to say the house was pretty quiet the next day.

Welcome to the Northwestern Evans Scholars’ Blog. Here is where we will be posting weekly news updates and information about our chapter.

First off, a little information about ourselves. The Evans Scholarship Foundation began with the dream of Chick Evans Jr., an amateur golfer who wanted to see deserving caddies receive higher education. Over the past 80 years, the ESF has sent more than 9,000 caddies to college, paying for a total of over $100 million in tuition.

The Alpha Chapter at Northwestern was established in 1940 and moved into 721 University, a building in the sorority quadrangle, in 1969. We were housed there up until the fall of 2008 when construction began to increase the capacity and conform to new building codes. You can read more about the project here.

We are currently housed just across the quad at 1856 Orrington until this fall when we are scheduled to move back into our own house.

But enough about the numbers and the buildings. Evans Scholars are some of the most diverse, interesting people you will ever meet and in the next posts we’ll be letting you know who we are and what we do at Northwestern Evans Scholars.
